Hamilton County was formed in 1818 and named after Alexander Hamilton, the United States' first Secretary of the Treasury. The county was originally agricultural, but its proximity to Indianapolis has made its southern half largely residential and commercial. Southern Hamilton County has three of Indiana's 20 largest cities: Carmel (8th at 79,000 residents), Fishers (9th at 77,000), and Noblesville (14th at 62,000). Hamilton County, Carmel, and Fishers have all received numerous 'best places' awards in recent years. The county also includes five more cities and nine townships. It is Indiana's fourth most populous county as well as the fastest-growing. Adjacent counties include Marion (home of Indianapolis) on the south, Boone on the west, Clinton on the northwest, Tipton on the north, Madison on the east, and Hancock on the southeast.
