What: Considered the oldest regional destination marketing organization in the nation, the Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance is celebrating its 100th anniversary. What: The Smelt Festival is moving this year from its location at the Lewiston waterfront to Academy Park to accommodate the larger crowds. Enjoy free samples of smelt, get your picture taken with the Smelt King, and listen to the Tim Britt Band. New at the festival is a smelt eating contest. The event is sponsored by the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce and the Niagara River Anglers.

Boldt Castle
Visitors can reach Boldt Castle, in the 1000 Islands in upstate New York, by boat. In 1900, George Boldt started building this castle as a monument of his love for his wife. When she died suddenly in 1904, he ordered work be stopped. He never returned. Workers had completed a 120-room castle, children’s playhouse and other outbuildings. Visitors take a self-guided tour through the property. Shuttle boats run from Alexandria Bay on the New York side of the St. Lawrence River. There are also docks for private craft.
Fort Ontario State Historic Site
The first fort on this site was built by the British in 1755 and destroyed by the French in 1756. The fort was destroyed and rebuilt three more times before it took its current form in 1844. From 1944 to 1946, the fort was the only refuge center for victims of the holocaust in the United States. The fort now belongs to New York State. Visitors can explore the parade grounds, officers’ and enlisted men’s quarters, the storehouse, and a powder magazine.
Amherst Museum
Amherst Museum recreates 19th century American life in western New York. The 35-acre living history museum has a one-room schoolhouse, churches and historic homes. Museum employees dress in period clothing and give demonstrations of life on the Niagara frontier with tools, paintings, ceramics and textiles on display. The Niederlander Research Library and Archives houses an extensive genealogy collection and is open to the public.
Explore & More Children’s Museum
This children’s museum’s hands-on exhibits include activities for toddlers to teens. In the Culture Corner, kids explore the world and learn about other peoples. Big Feats for Little Hands offers physical activities for babies and toddlers. Other exhibits focus on solving puzzles, architecture and growing food. The museum is available for birthday parties and offers programs for Scouts to earn badges.
Sciencenter Sagan Planet Walk
Created in memory of Cornell University professor Carl Sagan, the Sagan Planet Walk features a scale model of the solar system. The three-quarter mile walking trail begins at the center of downtown Ithaca and ends at the Sciencenter, a museum with more than 250 hands-on exhibits. Along the way visitors pass markers representing the planets. A free audio tour of the walk is available at the Sciencenter website.
